Shaping Up Really Makes a Difference

Thursday May 31, 2007

My doctor for many years was a veteran age-group national sporting champion. He's now retired from doctoring and his favorite sport, which I won't mention for privacy reasons. Even though he was much older than me, I always thought he looked much younger than his age. It took me a few years and some experience to figure out why this was. Finally, I realized it was how he carried himself; yes, his posture. Doc had a loose, swaggering, upright movement in combination with that lean, slightly hungry look that can only come from athletic endeavor that provides the efficient joint and muscle movement so amply demonstrated in the extreme when a cat is stalking its prey.

I look at many men and women over 50 in particular and wish I could get them into the gym and into a suitable fitness program. You can see the cervical spine starting to bend over and the head and shoulders moving forward in protraction. Muscling up even slightly in the chest, shoulders and back can provide the stabilizers that keep those shoulders and the chest looking square -- and to take years off your life, visually at least!

Doing a complete basic strength and muscle program or a weights circuit program like Circuit Fit will get your body moving smoothly and squarely again. Make a start, it's worth it.
