Your muscles control your posture and movement, and are responsible for contraction of internal organs such as the the heart and digestive systems. 

Skeletal muscle is predominantly what you see on the outside of the body and which you can train to be larger and more defined. Muscle declines with age, especially if you don't keep exercising it. Being fit is about exercising and maintaining muscle performance -- including the heart muscle.
